NGOs encourage domestic violence victims to report cases

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) collaborating under the auspices of the Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Advocacy Group Against Domestic Violence known as Project Alert and Spotlight Initiative, , have urged victims of domestic violence such as rape to summon courage to report their cases to the right bodies for necessary actions.
They also warned the perpetrators to desist from the barbaric acts.
The NGOs gave strong warnings against child abuse, rape, wife battering and other such acts during a sensitization programme held recently.
To spread the information across the communities in Oshodi, Isolo and Ejigbo, the group working with artisans from the Nigeria Union of Tailors (NUT), Nigeria Association of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists (NASHCO) and some community members toured round Oke-Afa market to educate people on the menace of domestic violence and to ensure that it is wiped out of their various communities.
During the sensitisation, people were advised to call the attention of the association if need be for assistance in case of any form of domestic violence.
Speaking, Spotlight Initiative team leader, Engr. Joy Omiyale, said the organisations are ready to make sure domestic violence is eradicated in the society, emphasising the need for the victims to report cases.
He also urged the residents to work with the organisations by keeping them informed of any case of domestic violence or injustice in the various communities.
“Let us all shame the rapists but not the victims. Don’t be silent over physical or sexual abuse cases but feel free to report rape case and others so that our team can step in, take the necessary action against the perpetrators and as well give the medical attention to the victims,” he stated.
He implored the community members to always speak out and call for help if they find themselves in any of the violent situation for quick action to be taken, stressing that the alarming crisis has to be eradicated from human society.
