A woman, Chioma Okoye, is facing prosecution following an alleged scam to the tune of N30,000,000 in Banana Island, Lekki, Lagos.

The 40-year-old was said to have cunningly stole the sum under the pretence of coordinating a thrift contribution.

At the Yaba Chief Magistrate Court, where she was arrainged by the Lagos State Police Command, the prosecutor, Haruna Magaji, said that the suspect acted in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace due to the fraudulent activity.

Magaji stressed that the alleged offender alongside an accomplice at large, on December 23, 2023, fraudulently obtained the sum from one Danjuma Caroline – the complainant.

The prosecutor went further to disclose that when the victim demanded for the dividends of her contribution, the suspect said that she used the money for a business project and will refund it to her.

A while after, the complainant once again requested for her money. The suspect knowing fully well that her utterances over the money were false and couldn’t refund the money began to send obnoxious voice notes to threaten the complainant.

Magaji said that the offender who is on a three-count charge bordering on stealing contravened Sections 314(1)(a), 280(1)(a)(b), and 168(d) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

He also stated that the receipt of the transaction, the recorded voice note, and the statement of the complainant serve as evidence against the defendant.

The defendant pleaded not guilty.

The Magistate, Olatunde Adefope, granted the suspect bail in the sum of N500,000. He ordered that the suspect provide two sureties with valid proof of identification.

Adefope called for a re-arraignment of the defendant on July 10 for further hearing.
