Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has based its tariff increase on gas price, inflation, exchange rate, US inflation rate and available generation capacity as some of the indices considered for the tariff increase.
The Commission has approved tariff increases for six power distribution companies (DisCos).
The distribution companies include Ikeja Electricity, Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC); Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC); Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC); Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company Distribution Company (IKEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
The new approval took effect on 1st January 2022 but the new rate is from February 2022.
The Commission also noted that the indices with the potential impact on electricity rates were considered.
