Two Die After Tanker Explosion On Badagry Expressway

At least two persons have died following a diesel tanker explosion which happened at along Badagry Expressway, causing grief and unrest in the area.

The driver of a Mac Truck involved in the fatal auto crash, conveying diesel was said to have driven recklessly, on uncontrollable speed while trying to manoeuvre past another motorist after which it exploded during the mishap which happened early hours of Thursday.

The driver alongside a female occupant in the truck were said to have died in the inferno despite efforts from emergency rescuers which made way to the school scene to restore order at the scene.

Upon arrival of operatives of the of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (Ojo Unit), and the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, the Ijanikin Police Division and the Lagos State Transport Management Authority, LASTMA, members of the public who had converged on the scene with assorted containers to scoop were stopped in order to prevent further explosions and avoidable casualties.

The severely burnt tanker was the evacuated from the expressway to prevent further road mishaps along the busy transport corridor while remains of burnt bodies were removed by FRSC.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.

Bakare-Oki described the incident as deeply painful and entirely avoidable. He further underscored the urgent necessity for tanker and articulated vehicle drivers to exercise heightened caution, observe prescribed speed limits and comply strictly with all traffic regulations, noting that reckless driving and over speeding remain dominant factors in fatal road traffic crashes across the metropolis.

The agency’s GM cautioned members of the public against the dangerous and irresponsible practice of scooping petroleum and diesel products from accident scenes, emphasizing that such conduct poses grave and far-reaching risks to both individuals and the general public.

He reaffirmed the Authority’s steadfast commitment to road safety and the sanctity of human life.
