A tragic road accident occurred early Sunday, June 22, 2025, on Old Ipaja Road, near Agbotikuyo, when a 40-foot containerized truck overturned onto a commercial minibus, known as a “Korope.” The driver of the minibus was killed instantly.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that the fully-laden Mack truck (MUS 729 XY) suffered a catastrophic brake failure, causing it to lose control and crush the smaller vehicle.

Despite the tragic loss of life, LASTMA officers on duty quickly responded to the scene. They successfully rescued three passengers from the minibus – two women and one man – who, though unhurt, were immediately handed over to medical emergency responders for evaluation.

The overturned truck blocked over half of the road, leading to significant traffic congestion that extended to nearby routes like Shofunde and Olufunlayo. LASTMA operatives swiftly implemented traffic diversion and control protocols to manage the backlog and restore order.

The driver of the articulated truck attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by vigilant LASTMA officers. He was then transferred to security personnel from the Elere and Area ‘G’ Police Divisions, who had been notified by LASTMA.

Several emergency response teams collaborated efficiently at the scene, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit, Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS), and officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa expressed profound sorrow over the incident and extended his condolences to the bereaved family. He took the opportunity to issue a strong reminder to all operators of articulated vehicles about the critical importance of vigilance and mechanical diligence.

“Truck operators must adhere strictly to safety protocols. It is non-negotiable that every articulated vehicle undergo thorough mechanical inspection  especially the braking systems before venturing onto our roads. Preventable tragedies like this underscore the need for unwavering compliance.”
