Panic has gripped residents of Olateju Street, Lekki Phase One, following the brutal killing of three men believed to be casual labourers in the early hours of Sunday.

The victims, yet to be identified as of press time, reportedly lived together in a makeshift structure on the premises of a building where they took up daily jobs and errands to earn a living.

Residents told Echonews that the attackers stormed the structure while the men were asleep, dragged them outside, and hacked them to death with machetes.

“When people rushed there, the three of them were found lying in a pool of blood with machete cuts all over their bodies,” said a resident, Alfred, who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media.

A member of the Lekki Estate Residents Association, who also spoke anonymously, confirmed the incident threw the neighbourhood into shock.

“We have never witnessed something like this on this street. Security patrols are now being reinforced,” he said.

Although the motive behind the killings remains unclear, multiple sources within the community suggested it may be linked to rising cult-related clashes in Lagos. Over the past year, Lekki and its surrounding communities have witnessed sporadic violence tied to cult groups, with machete attacks and targeted killings reported in Lakowe, Ajah, and other parts of Ibeju-Lekki.

In August, a skit maker known only as Austin was killed in Lakowe under similar circumstances. Suspected cultists were said to have broken into his residence at dawn, dragged him outside, and cut him with machetes until he died.

Community leaders now fear the latest killings may signal an escalation in such attacks.

“The pattern is too similar to be ignored,” one source told Echonews, warning that cult groups appear to be tightening their grip on neighbourhoods once thought to be safe.

Residents have appealed for urgent intervention from security agencies to forestall further bloodshed.
