President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the National Assembly to accelerate the passage of the Tax Reform Bill, describing it as essential to achieving economic stability and national development.

The President made the appeal on Wednesday, during his Democracy Day address to a joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja.

Tinubu said the proposed tax legislation is central to his administration’s efforts to broaden the tax base, eliminate multiple taxation, and create a more efficient and transparent fiscal system.

> “I urge you to give urgent consideration to the Tax Reform Bill before you. We must mobilize domestic resources more efficiently to meet the development aspirations of our people,” Tinubu said.

He noted that the bill aligns with the work of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, headed by Taiwo Oyedele, which has been tasked with overhauling the nation’s tax system to make it pro-growth and investment-friendly.

The President emphasized that passing the tax bill would support the administration’s drive to reduce dependence on borrowing, boost non-oil revenue, and finance critical infrastructure and social programs.

The bill, once passed, is expected to harmonize existing taxes, streamline revenue collection, and empower both federal and subnational governments to improve service delivery without placing undue burden on citizens.
