Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has made history as the first African female artist to record seven entries on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The milestone follows the debut of her song What You Need at No. 93 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, bringing her total number of appearances on the chart to seven.
With the achievement, Tems now ties Nigerian star Burna Boy and South African rock band Seether as the African artists with the highest number of Billboard Hot 100 entries, at seven each.
Tems previously made history in 2022 when she became the first African artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. She achieved the feat with Wait For U, her collaboration with American rappers Future and Drake.
The singer could soon set a new record outright. J. Cole’s upcoming track Bunce Road Blues, which features Tems and Future, is projected to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 next week — a move that would give her a record-breaking eighth entry.
Tems has continued to expand her global footprint in recent years, earning critical acclaim and major international collaborations that have strengthened her position as one of Africa’s leading music exports.
