No fewer than 100 women were screened for breast and cervical cancers by a non-governmental organisation, Sisters of Jannah, Lagos zone during the weekend.
According to the organisation, the gesture a part of effort to support government in sensitising the public about the deadly cancer.
At the programme held at Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye local government, Mushin, Lagos, many other beneficiaries also received thorough teeth treatment from dentists on ground, while a number of women also benefitted from subsidized cervical vaccine administration.
The organisation also sensitised women on the need to check regularly their breast to know their status.
It also embarked on aerobics/walkout which was aimed at getting people used to exercising their bodies.
The programme also featured series of health talk and counseling from seasoned health practitioners as well as mental health counselors.
Speaking to journalists at the event, the Lagos zone coordinator of the group, Mrs Ruqayat Busari called on government to increase sensitization campaign on existence of cancer.
She implored government to take up administering cervical vaccine to women at highly subsidized rate as well as providing in excess, machines to carry out mammogram screening on women.
In her words: “It’s highly necessary that government intervene with aggressive sensitization of the existence of breast and cervical cancers. The government needs to assist in providing enough machines to be used in carrying out mammogram on women.”
On her own, the Lagos zone Publicity secretary of the group, Mrs Shakira Adeleke called on women all around the world to ensure they check their breasts after every menstrual cycle as advised by medical personnel.
This was buttressed by a health personnel, Hajiia Kofoworola Akanni, who urged women to always go for check up to know their status.
According to her, “It is highly important that every woman goes for breast and cervical checks at interval to know their status. This will help them take necessary step in case of any eventuality.”
