Sanwo-Olu Launches N150bn CNG Truck Program To Enhance Positive Transport System

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unveiled the first phase of a N150 billion initiative aimed at modernizing the state’s logistical sector and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Sanwo-Olu said that the measure put in place to introduce 2,000 Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, trucks for port and haulage operations, is also aimed at enhancing safety and phasing out ageing and unsafe trucks in the metropolis.
The Governor relayed that the is a public-private partnership supported by a N150 billion soft-loan facility from United Bank for Africa, UBA, fashioned at replacing unsafe trucks with reliable, CNG-powered vehicles.
He added that the initiative also seeks to improve digital infrastructure for logistics management, reduce operational costs, and ensure a predictable flow of goods.
During the launch of the programme on Wednesday at the LTV Ground, Agidingbi Road, Alausa, Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Transportation, Sola Giwa, said, “Our government has initiated a programme to support truck owners to acquire brand-new vehicles through affordable and well-structured credit facilities.
“We are working with financial institutions and development partners to ensure fleet renewal is accessible to operators across all levels.
“Lagos cannot become a globally competitive logistics hub while relying on ageing trucks with faulty brakes, weakened frames, and damaged tyres,” Sanwo-Olu hinted.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, described the forum as a shared commitment to building a safer, cleaner, and more efficient logistics ecosystem.
Osiyemi stressed that driver’s safety assessments, including free eye examinations and corrective eyewear for those in need are colossal for the measure.
Stakeholders praised the initiative and urged beneficiaries to leverage the programme to grow personally and strengthen the area’s economy.
