Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday formally swore in Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa as the substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government Area, ending weeks of speculation and confirming a new phase of leadership at the grassroots level in Lagos State.

The swearing-in ceremony, which took place at the Lagos House, Alausa, marked the official transition of Obasa from Acting Chairman to the duly recognised Chairman of Agege Local Government. Until his confirmation, Obasa had been steering the affairs of the council in an acting capacity, overseeing administrative and developmental responsibilities within the densely populated local government.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu charged the new chairman to uphold transparency, accountability and people-oriented governance, stressing that local governments remain the closest tier of government to the people and must reflect the values of service, inclusiveness and development. He reminded the council leadership that expectations from residents were high, particularly in areas of infrastructure, primary healthcare, education and environmental sanitation.

The governor also emphasised the importance of teamwork between the executive arm, councillors and traditional institutions within Agege, noting that effective collaboration would be critical to delivering tangible dividends of democracy at the community level.

In his acceptance remarks, Obasa expressed gratitude to the governor and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to build on existing programmes, strengthen service delivery and prioritise policies that would directly improve the living conditions of residents across wards in the local government.

Obasa further assured that his administration would focus on inclusive governance, youth empowerment and sustained engagement with community stakeholders to ensure that development initiatives reflect the real needs of the people.

The event was attended by top government officials, party leaders, traditional rulers and supporters from Agege, who described the swearing-in as a stabilising moment for the local government’s administration.

More details are expected to emerge as the new chairman settles into office and unveils his policy direction for Agege Local Government Area.
