Road users treat us with contempt, street sweepers complain

Street sweepers across major roads in Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) have complained about the road users’ attitude to them.

According to them, some road users disregard them and treat them with contempt while many motorists and okada riders almost hit them on the roads.

One of the street sweepers around Pako Axis, Mrs. Olabisi Saidi, lamented that motorcyclists and okada riders often disregard their road signs indicating that they were working on a particular portion of the road.

She explained that another challenge they deal with in the axis comes from cart pushers who always dump wastes on the road sides and drains, making their efforts amount to nothing.

She said: “Some of our challenges in this area are that road users, the Okada riders particularly disregard our road signs and look down on us when we complain. We are extra careful when working on the roadsides to avoid sorry situations. The cart pushers compound our challenge as they always mess up the roadsides and drains after we would have cleared them up but, we don’t have choice than to do the work again. We hope the LAWMA taskforce or police can be stationed in this area to arrest them. The PSP operators are trying, they work hand-in-hand with us.”

The sweepers along Osolo Way have similarly complaints.

They emphasised the need for the government to make their payment steady and put in place an effective health care programme to encourage them discharge their duties religiously.

“Our challenges here are just that the PSP operators only clear the heap of wastes at Aiye Bus Stop and leave out the rest along the road. We want them to do a thorough operation here so as to complement our efforts.

“We want the government to pay our salary on time and possibly increase it. We are trying, we ensure we give our best to the community and make sure the roads are clean. We hope government can encourage us by increasing our money, supplying us with more equipment that will enhance our work and also give priority to our health by setting up health care scheme for waste managers in the state.”is
