Residents of Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area have urged the newly appointed Supervisor for Environment and Waste Management, Mr. Dauda Oshinlaja, to prioritise environmental sanitation and develop effective strategies to tackle persistent waste management challenges in the council area.

Oshinlaja was on Monday inaugurated alongside other cabinet members by the Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, Omo’ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun.

Following his appointment, residents and public commentators called on the new supervisor to swiftly outline a blueprint that would address indiscriminate waste disposal and improve environmental cleanliness within the council.

A social critic and public commentator, Mr. Dayo Osore, while congratulating Oshinlaja on his return to the council’s executive cabinet, charged him to work toward making the LCDA one of the cleanest communities in Lagos.

He stressed the need for strict enforcement against indiscriminate dumping of refuse and urged the supervisor to introduce programmes that would strengthen waste management in the area.

Supervisor for Environment and Waste Management, Hon. Dauda Oshinlaja, I hope Igbogbo LCDA will be as clean as Kigali. Indiscriminate dumping of refuse should be treated with utmost seriousness. I also look forward to seeing your programmes on waste management, bearing in mind that there is a link between waste and wealth,” he said.

Osore further advocated policies that would compel households to have waste bins for proper storage of refuse before evacuation, noting that effective waste recycling begins from the point where waste is generated.

According to him, every local council should establish a structured waste management system that would ensure proper collection, transfer and recycling of refuse.

Another commentator, identified as Oluwa_Diaspora, also called on council authorities to strengthen their waste disposal mechanisms and deploy trucks to regularly evacuate waste from residential areas.

He noted that delays in waste evacuation often lead residents to dump refuse indiscriminately, worsening environmental conditions.

There needs to be alternatives to existing dump sites, but pending when those are created, every LCDA should have a functional waste disposal unit or trucks moving around to collect refuse from homes. Otherwise, people will keep dumping waste indiscriminately,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr. Babatunde Afuwape, a chieftain of the Igbogbo Development Association (IDEA), advocated the adoption of waste-to-wealth initiatives as a long-term solution to Nigeria’s waste management problems.

According to him, advanced countries have successfully converted waste into valuable resources such as electricity, organic fertilisers, and biofuels.

“The situation at Olusosun ought to have been a thing of the past if waste-to-wealth initiatives had been aggressively pursued. Countries like Sweden, Norway and Japan have shown that waste can be converted into valuable resources. We can learn from them and engage experts to help us achieve similar results,” he said.

Residents expressed optimism that the new supervisor would introduce practical reforms that would significantly improve environmental sanitation and waste management across Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA.
