Residents Accuse Lagos Government Of Blocking Drainage At Ilubirin Estate
By Felix Kuyinu
The residents in Ilubirin Estate in Lagos Island have accused the state government of illegally installing a pump station on drainages in the area, demanding demolition of the structures to curb making it a factor to the flooding experienced in the community.
The agitators alleged that the facility which requires billions of naira yearly to run on diesel is a misuse of taxpayers’ money.
They stressed that the solution for the drainage in the community lies in reopening the blocked water channel to the sea, which they say has been obstructed by the state-backed Ilubirin Housing Project.
A resident said, “This pump may offer momentary relief, but it’s not the real solution.
“The natural drainage to the lagoon has been blocked by construction at Ilubirin, and until that’s reversed, we’ll keep suffering.”
Another said, “If Wahab can demolish markets and homes in places like Lekki and Ikota for blocking water channels, why is Ilubirin untouchable?”
A community leader said, “We need a permanent solution, not a diesel-powered patchwork. Open the drainage to the sea. Enough of the games,”
