The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Ikorodu Local Government in the last council elections, Mrs Saidat Odofin Fafowora, is dead.

Fafowora, who also contested for the Lagos East Senatorial seat on the platform of the PDP, reportedly died on Sunday night at her Agbala residence in Ikorodu.

EchoNews gathered that she was found unconscious in her home and was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The late politician, an indigene of Ikorodu and a prominent opposition figure in Lagos State, came second in the July 12, 2025 local government elections.

Until her death, Fafowora was known for her consistent advocacy for grassroots development and inclusive governance. She had often expressed a strong desire to contribute to the transformation of Ikorodu, citing her passion for community service as the driving force behind her political ambition.

In a previous interaction with the press, she explained her decision to contest the chairmanship seat, describing it as a call to service.

“Why I decided to go for the chairmanship position is simply because of a dream — a dream that we need to do something quickly about Ikorodu. I want to do something for my people,” she had said.

>“When you want to make a difference in the lives of the people, the best way to start is at home. We want to change the lives of our people, starting from Ikorodu.”

She spoke extensively about her plans to improve education, healthcare and youth development at the grassroots.

“We can run affordable schools within our town and give our children better education. We can provide medical facilities and create employment opportunities for our people,” she stated.

Fafowora also maintained that Nigeria’s development could only be sustained through effective grassroots leadership, with particular attention to youth empowerment.

Academically, the late politician attended the University of Ibadan, where she obtained her first degree and briefly worked with the institution teaching first-year students. She served her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Sokoto, an experience she once described as “absolutely amazing and fantastic.”

She later returned to England for her Master’s degree in English and Film.

Until her passing, she worked in the field of Human Resources, a profession she said gave her deeper insight into people management and community needs.

Her death has thrown the Ikorodu political space into mourning, with party members, associates and residents expressing shock and sadness over her sudden demise.
