In a move that underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to inclusive urban renewal, verified residents of the Oworonshoki community in Kosofe Local Government Area have received compensation for properties affected during recent clearance exercises. The initiative, carried out through the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), reflects the government’s drive to balance development with compassion.
The two-day compensation exercise, which commenced on October 23 at the palace of the traditional ruler of Oworonshoki, drew significant attention from community members, state officials, and civic observers. Representatives from LASURA, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), and civil society organizations were present to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the process.
According to the Director-General of LASURA, Mr. Oladimeji Animashaun, 79 verified beneficiaries were compensated between Thursday and Friday. He reaffirmed the state’s ongoing commitment to executing renewal projects that prioritize the welfare of affected residents.
Hon. Sanni Ganiyu Babatunde Okanlawon, Member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Kosofe Constituency I, was among the dignitaries who graced the event. He described the exercise as “a practical demonstration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s compassion and commitment to urban renewal with a human face.”
“What we are witnessing today is not merely about demolitions; it is about development with dignity,” Hon. Okanlawon said. “The affected residents are being duly compensated in line with the Governor’s assurance that no one will suffer unjustly in the process of renewing Lagos.”
The lawmaker further commended LASURA’s transparent handling of the process, noting that the regeneration effort would reposition Oworonshoki as a model for community-focused urban planning. He added that the project would bring long-term benefits, including improved housing, modern drainage systems, potable water, and accessible road networks, aimed at transforming the coastal community into a livable and economically vibrant area.
Hon. Okanlawon appealed to residents to cooperate with the government, stressing that the short-term discomfort would pave the way for lasting progress.
“I understand the emotions involved, but Lagos is expanding, and we must plan our space responsibly,” he stated. “The goal is to make Oworonshoki a place where families can live in safety and comfort.”
The compensation initiative is part of the Lagos State Government’s broader vision under the THEMES Plus agenda — focusing on Traffic Management, Health, Education, Making Lagos a 21st-century Economy, Entertainment & Tourism, and Security — reaffirming that no community will be left behind in the state’s journey toward modernization and sustainable growth.
