Ibeju Lekki Local Government Chairman,

Egnr. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, conducts an inspection tour of various canals and drainage systems within the council area alongside officials from the drainage services.

The inspection which was held on Sunday 30th July 2024, covered key sites includes military quarters at Eleko, Ayeteju en route Igando-Oloja, Elemoro, Kajola, Oribanwa, and Gbetu en route Adeba.

At the military quarters in Eleko, Olowa observed that illegal shops erected along the expressway drainage had blocked the entrance to the community. While, in Ayeteju, he inspected an ongoing drainage construction project. In Elemoro, commercial haulage activities were found to disrupt water flow, while the Kajola canal was overrun with hyacinth.

A major concern at Gbetu Community was the inaccessibility of the road to adjoining communities due to flooding. The state officials assured that actions would be initiated to address this issue.

“The flooding and blocked drainages we’ve observed are alarming,” said Olowa. “This inspection is crucial to identify and address the issues causing these disruptions. We are committed to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to mitigate flooding and improve drainage.”

Residents are urged to avoid activities that contribute to environmental degradation and support government efforts to combat flooding. “The heavy downpour this year seems much more intense,” noted Hon. Olowa. “We call on residents to take necessary precautions and cooperate with government agencies as we implement actions to mitigate flooding.”
