Okobi Urges Sport Women To Embrace Motherhood
By Saheed Afolabi
Nigeria veteran midfield star, Ngozi Okobi has backed sports women athletes to embrace motherhood as it brings a balance to their career.
The midfield maestro opened up about the joys, challenges, and empowerment she’s found in juggling motherhood with her football career. She recently rejoined the national team camp in Yaoundé, Cameroon, marking her comeback after giving birth to her first child in September 2024.
The Nigeria women’s national team is gearing up for a crucial double-header of international friendlies against Cameroon. These matches serve as key preparations for upcoming competitions, including the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Okobi, a former FIFA Women’s World Cup participant and multiple WAFCON winner, expressed deep gratitude and excitement upon her return to the squad.
“I’m excited and happy to be back in the team again. I’m grateful and honoured.
“I don’t think anyone should expect what they want from me; rather, they should expect what I want for myself.”
The 32-year-old, who currently plays for Ottawa Rapid FC in Canada, revealed that motherhood is a blessing not a barrier and urged other women in sports to embrace it with courage.
“It’s all about being courageous. I had to understand that I’m a strong woman,” Okobi explained.
“Being a footballer shouldn’t stop you from having a child. Childbirth is a blessing and never a curse.”
Married since 2017, Okobi deliberately timed her decision to start a family, waiting until her career had reached a solid stage.
“I was looking for a child earlier, but my career took it this long.
“Having a child now may raise questions from family and others, but I waited because I wanted my career to reach a certain level. If you want to take this step, just be courageous. If I can do it, you also can.”
Okobi brings in wealth of experience, valuable leadership and motivation to a Falcons squad that mixes emerging talent with seasoned players.
