The residents of Odiolowo-Ojuwoye have commended the Lagos State Government on the cleanup initiative that serves the purpose of keeping Lagos environment clean.
The Chairman of the Odiolowo-Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area Rasaq Ajala and local leaders from Akala, Idioro, and its surroundings earlier in the week oversaw the demolition of unauthorized buildings and removal of drainage systems in the area following Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwoolu’s Cleaner Environmental Agenda for Lagos State
The removal of multiple illegal constructions was accomplished as a result of the cleanup campaign, which started on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.
Many structures were still standing despite earlier warnings to the concerned residents, forcing the demolition work done yesterday.
The goal of this exercise was highlighted by Ajala, who said, “This action is not meant to penalize those affected but is a crucial step to ensure a flood-free community.”
“Recent heavy rainfall has resulted in flooding because these structures have blocked drains,” he stated.
We are starting the operation in my ward (A2), and similar operations will soon be underway in other wards as well.
He expressed worry about the risks to the environment posed by these buildings, which interfere with the free flow of water and have an impact on the neighborhood.
Several residents, speaking anonymously, commended the cleanup initiative, with one stating, “We can finally enjoy fresh air in our homes now that these structures are being removed.”
Abosede Olanrewaju Elegbeleye, the Joint CDA Secretary of Owode, Akinbiyi, Idumagbo, and Adegbite, confirmed that prior notices were issued to the community to remove all structures obstructing free flow in our drainages.
“We informed the community about today’s exercise in advance,” he mentioned.
The collaborative efforts of HRA led by the government, community leaders, youth leaders, and other stakeholders in the community has helped in solving environmental hazard and flooding that could have affected the community.
