NYCN Ikorodu North Holds Maiden Annual Congress, Charts Path for Youth Development

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ikorodu North Local Branch, on Friday, December 27, 2025, held its maiden Annual Congress at the LASTMA Yard, Ikorodu North, Lagos State, marking a major milestone in the branch’s institutional growth and youth development drive.

The historic congress brought together youth leaders, government representatives, community stakeholders, and members of the council to deliberate on strategies for sustainable youth engagement, leadership development, and grassroots impact within Ikorodu North.

Held under the theme “Future-Focused Youth: Local Steps, Global Impact,” the congress reflected the branch’s vision of nurturing proactive and responsible youths capable of driving positive change locally while making meaningful global contributions.

In his welcome address, the Youth Coordinator of NYCN Ikorodu North, Comrade Jackson Adewale A. O., expressed gratitude to members and stakeholders for their unwavering support. He described the congress as a defining moment for the branch, stressing that it was aimed at strengthening unity, accountability, and purposeful leadership among youths in the council area.

A major highlight of the event was the keynote address delivered by Hon. Olakanmi Tijani, who urged youths to embrace a future-focused mindset. He emphasized the importance of innovation, civic responsibility, and strategic planning, noting that these qualities are essential for youths to remain relevant and impactful in a rapidly evolving society.

The congress featured detailed Secretariat Reports highlighting achievements and milestones recorded by the branch within the year. Financial and Auditor’s Reports were also presented, reaffirming the council’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and prudent resource management.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to youth development, awards were presented to Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), Voluntary Youth Organizations (VYOs), and directorates. Sheriff Guard of Nigeria, Ikorodu North, emerged as Best Performing VYO, while Agbala Otuja Youth Forum won the award for Most Active CBO. Maya Youth Association was honored as Best Performing CBO.

Individual recognitions were also presented, with Comrade Momoh Yusroh named Most Outstanding Directorate, Comrade Hamzah Alagbe as Best Performing Directorate, and Comrade Ikimot Tijani as Most Supportive Directorate.

Special recognition plaques were presented to key stakeholders for their consistent support of youth development. Honourees included the NYCN Lagos State Chairman, Engr. Adigun Ibrahim, the Vice Chairman, Lagos East, Comrade Asoro Abubakri, and other notable contributors.

Speaking at the event, Engr. Adigun Ibrahim commended the leadership of NYCN Ikorodu North, describing the congress as a landmark achievement. He particularly applauded the branch’s active involvement in Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) advocacy, stressing its importance in strengthening democratic participation among youths.

In a motivational highlight, three outstanding youths who were the first to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) were rewarded with instant cash gifts.

The congress also witnessed the presence of the Divisional Commissioner of Scouts, Ikorodu Division, KIM Abdulhakeem Agbaje, as well as all councillors representing Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area, led by the Council Leader of the 6th Legislative Assembly, Hon. Bose Benson.

Participants described the 2025 Annual Congress as impactful and forward-looking, noting that it has set a solid foundation for stronger youth advocacy, leadership development, and community engagement in Ikorodu North in the years ahead.
