Nigerian filmmaker and actress Funke Akindele has made history with her latest movie, Behind the Scenes, which has become the first Nollywood film to surpass N2 billion in cinema sales.
FilmOne, one of Nigeria’s leading film distributors, announced that the movie grossed an impressive N2,103,039,706 within just one month of its release.
The distributor revealed in a post on X that this milestone cements Funke Akindele’s status as Africa’s most commercially successful filmmaker, making her the highest-grossing producer, writer, and director in West African history.
In addition, Akindele has become the first filmmaker to rank number one at the African box office for three consecutive years.
Celebrating the achievement on Instagram, Akindele shared a video message expressing her gratitude to God and her fans. “We have every reason to thank God. 2 billion and counting is not a joke. Ladies and gentlemen, Behind the Scenes to the world,” she said.
She added, “Joy overflows, my heart is full of gratitude to God and my amazing fans. Reaching this incredible milestone and still counting would not have been possible without you. I’m deeply grateful.”
