Nollywood star, Laide Bakare, has disclosed that she personally introduced her daughter to clubbing and alcohol when she was just 17 years old.
The actress made the revelation during a recent interview with content creator, Mr Lilgaga. According to Bakare, she wanted her daughter to always remember her as the one who first exposed her to nightlife.
“I took my daughter to the club for the first time at 17. And I like the fact that in her memoir, she would reference me as the person who introduced her to alcohol and clubbing,” she said.
Her statement has sparked widespread debate online, with many Nigerians criticising her decision to expose a minor to such experiences.
Some of the reactions on X (formerly Twitter) include:
It_hafizski: “Introducing a 17-year-old to alcohol and nightlife is reckless parenting, not cruise. At that age, guidance and discipline should come first, not clubbing.”
Just_2undey: “Some of these people are not worth the pedestal the public puts them on. And this is coming from someone who calls herself a mother.”
DamiTheOG: “Many of those you admire are often poor role models as parents.”
Shuluemp: “What kind of mother takes pride in introducing her 17-year-old to alcohol and clubbing?”
Sturbyrich: “Low-key, this is normal. At least her daughter can be open with her. If she didn’t take her, she would still go on her own and maybe even do worse.”
Brainpink: “Leave her alone, that’s her parenting style. Sometimes when you overprotect children, they’ll still find their way into clubs, drinking and even smoking without you knowing. But still, small small ooo.”
Bakare’s comments continue to divide opinions, raising questions about parenting styles, cultural attitudes towards nightlife, and the influence of celebrities on family values.
