The Mosan-Okunola Local Council Development Area has taken a major step to support its residents’ livelihoods, with the council chairman, Hon. Akindele Adunni Opeyemi, disbursing ₦10 million in cash to 100 beneficiaries. Each recipient received ₦100,000 to help grow their businesses and strengthen their economic activities.
Speaking during the second edition of the cash empowerment initiative, Hon. Akindele explained that the programme is part of fulfilling campaign promises while supporting residents to expand their vocations and business ventures. She noted that the success of the first edition encouraged the council to roll out this second phase.
The beneficiaries were drawn from a wide range of groups in the community, including the National Youth Council, persons living with disabilities, ethnic associations, market women, Community Development Committees (CDC), Community Development Associations (CDA), religious bodies like the League of Imams, Alfas, and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), traditional rulers, and political party members.
Hon. Akindele emphasized that the programme aims to help residents enhance their businesses and vocations. She added that the council would monitor the use of the funds to ensure they are spent as intended.
“We monitored the first edition, and we will also monitor this one. We have their data and will carry out unannounced checks to ensure the objectives of the programme are achieved,” she said.
The Head of the Department of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Mrs. Akintayo Funmilayo, noted that the programme is part of the council’s broader agenda to improve residents’ welfare and reduce poverty. She revealed that inspections after the first edition showed many beneficiaries successfully expanded their businesses, and she expressed optimism that the new beneficiaries would do the same.
High Chief Aina Balogun, the Baale of Odemuyiwa, praised the initiative, describing it as a historic move for the local government. The Coordinator of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Mosan-Okunola branch, Olowoyobiojo Muftah, also commended the chairman, noting that this is the first time such support has been extended to youths by the LCDA.
A community member, Mr. Victor, joined in praising the initiative, encouraging beneficiaries, particularly petty traders and small-scale entrepreneurs, to make the most of the ₦100,000 support to grow their businesses.
