The Ikeja High Court in Lagos has convicted a man identified as Adeola Agborin over murder of his lover.

Justice Lateef Akapo sentenced Agbonri to 21 years imprisonment for killing the victim, one Matha Farinmade.

The State’s Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP, Babajide Martins, told the court that the convict pleaded guilty to an amended one-count charge of murder brought against him by the state on July 3, 2024.

According to the DPP, the deceased and the convict lived together before the incident.

While prosecuting the jailer, Martins, who called on two prosecution witnesses, uttered that a squabble ensued between the convict and deceased on January 5, 2012, due to the latter being accused of being in an amorous affair with a man noted as Dare Shodipo.

One of the witnesses, an Investigative Police Officer, IPO, Festus Utmoru, who handled the case, tendered exhibit P1-P5 which included the confessional statement of the defendant, investigation report and pictures of the deceased.

Prosecution witness (2), Elizabeth Farinmade, the deceased mother, gave her evidence on how the lawbreaker was seen by residents in the area they lived dumping the body of the deceased.

The DPP urged the court to sentence the offender accordingly. According to him, the conviction and sentencing of the defendant would ensure that justice has been done and will help keep the society safe from criminal acts.

Sentencing the lawbreaker, Justice Akapo held, “The defendant, Agbonri, showed signs of rage and the deceased was advised not to go home with him.

“The body of the deceased was later discovered in the early hours of January 7, 2012 in the gutter in front of her mother’s house.”

“Due to the presentations of the IPO, the victim’s mother and your confessional statement, this court finds you guilty of the murder act. You are hereby sentenced to 21 years of in prison”.
