Man Jailed For Attempted Sexual Assault On Neighbour’s Granddaughter

The Special Offences Court in Ikeja Lagos has sentenced a lawbreaker to 17-year in prison for an attempted sexual assault.

The convict, Sunday Okoronkwo, pleaded guilty to the act on the victim, a seven-year-old neighbour’s granddaughter.

Delivering the judgement, the Presiding Judge, Justice Rahman Oshodi, said they the prosecution was able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the jailer commited the act.

Oshodi also uttered that the offender had a plea bargain tendered in a two-count charge of attempted sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault.

The judge remanded Okoronkwo at theKirikiri Correctional Centre. While making the judgement, he said: “You sexually assaulted a 7-year-old child who was your neighbour’s granddaughter.

“The prosecutrix’s evidence, which was corroborated by both your confessions, established that you had sexual intercourse with her.

“You have elected to enter into a plea bargain agreement wherein you pleaded guilty to attempting to commit sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault.

“The maximum sentence for attempting to commit sexual assault by penetration is 14 years imprisonment, whilst sexual assault carries a maximum term of three years imprisonment.”

“This court thereafter sentences you to 14 years imprisonment for attempted sexual assault by penetration and three years for sexual assault.

“This will run consecutively from December 14, 2018, when you were first remanded in custody.

“Furthermore, under sections 33 and 38 of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law, 2021, I hereby order that your name be registered in the Lagos State Sex Offenders Register maintained by the Lagos State Government,”

He advised the jailer saying:“I strongly urge you to use this period of incarceration constructively by participating in available rehabilitation programmes, particularly those addressing sexual offending behaviour.”

The offences was said to have violated Sections 262 and 263 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
