Algeria legend, Riyad Mahrez has revealed that he’s proud of his Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) legacy after exiting the competition in the quarter final against Nigeria.

Mahrez who won the AFCON in 2019, made six appearances in the competition as he quieted the continental showpiece at the age of 34.

Speaking to ECHONEWS exclusively, He described his AFCON experience as an incredible legacy which included a title win in 2019.

“My AFCON experience have been incredible, six AFCON tournaments appearances. I have won one title. I’m really happy with everything we have done.”

The former Manchester City winger said he wanted to win the 2025 AFCON but it was difficult to accomplish because luck and the right direction wasn’t on their side.

“Of course I tried to win the 2025 AFCON but it is really difficult to win this tournament because you really need everything to be together and be in the right direction, a bit of luck but we missed and it’s football.”

The Algeria skipper admitted the Super Eagles were the better side and deserved the win in their quarter final game at the Grande Stade de Marrakech.

“It’s unfortunate we lost, Nigeria were the better than us, they were the better side. We have to be honest.”

Mahrez made his AFCON debut in 2015, and went on to play in the 2017, 2019, 2021 2023 and 2025 editions. His remarkable milestone was winning the 2019 edition in the lone goal win against Senegal in the final on July 19, 2019.

The playmaker is Algeria AFCON all time highest goal scorer with eight goals as he surpassed former international Lakhdar Belloumi on six goals.
