‘Love Is Not Possession’ — Tems Speaks on Past Toxic Relationship
Popular Nigerian singer Tems has opened up about her experience in a toxic relationship, describing it as obsessive and possessive.
Speaking during an interview with media personality Angie Martinez, the “Essence” crooner shared her perspective on what true love should represent.
According to her, the relationship she once thought was love turned out to be unhealthy, as her partner exhibited controlling behaviour.
She explained that genuine love is rooted in partnership, not ownership, stressing that no one has the right to control another person.
“Love is not obsession and it is not possession. I can’t own another human being,” she said, adding that many people confuse control with affection.
Tems noted that toxic relationships can be emotionally draining, especially when the partner involved is unaware of their behaviour.
She added that some individuals claim to love their partners but fail to realise that true love cannot exist where there is a sense of ownership.
Reflecting on her experience, the singer emphasised that healthy relationships should be built on mutual respect, understanding, and emotional balance rather than control.
