LIRS Extends Tax Filing Deadline to April 14
The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has extended the deadline for filing individual annual income tax returns, giving taxpayers across Lagos a fresh window to meet their statutory obligations.
The new deadline, now set for April 14, follows the initial March 31 cutoff, offering relief to thousands of residents yet to complete their filings. The extension is part of efforts to encourage wider compliance while allowing individuals ample time to submit accurate and error-free returns.
According to LIRS, the move underscores its commitment to building a more inclusive and efficient tax system, where compliance is simplified and accessible. Taxpayers are, however, reminded that the extension does not waive penalties for non-compliance beyond the new deadline.
The agency maintained that all returns must be filed electronically via its eTax platform, reinforcing its transition to a fully digital tax administration system. Filers are advised to ensure that their Tax Identification Numbers (TIN) and supporting details are correctly entered to avoid processing delays.
Under Nigerian tax laws, every income-earning individual—including employees, entrepreneurs, and freelancers—is required to file annual returns. Even for those under the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) system, filing remains essential for proper documentation and eligibility for tax clearance certificates.
With the clock now reset, LIRS is urging residents to take advantage of the extended deadline to regularise their tax status, avoid penalties, and contribute to the revenue base that supports critical infrastructure and public services across the state.
