LASPEMA Meets Stakeholders on use of setbacks, Incidental Open Spaces

The Lagos State Planning and Environmental Monitoring Authority (LASPEMA), has sought the collaboration of Local Government Areas (LGAs), Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and other stakeholders in re-ordering the use of Setbacks and Incidental Open Spaces (IOS).

Speaking during the first phase of the Stakeholders’ meeting and engagement held in Lagos, the General Manager of LASPEMA, Tpl. Daisi Oso said the engagement aimed to ensure urban face aesthetics, security of lives and properties of Lagosians, ease of movement of goods and services, waste management (solids and effluents) and coordinating Use of Setbacks and IOS which is the mandate of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

He stated that the government of Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu is aware of the enormous responsibility of protecting the lives and properties of residents and will not relent in his efforts using an improved T.H.E.M.E.S. PLUS agenda of the State Government.

He added that the engagement is premised on the need to carry along all stakeholders on the implementation of identification, enumeration of business activities, and re-ordering of the use of all Setbacks and IOS in Lagos State that has been majority abused and misused.

The General Manager applauded Mr. Governor’s support of all the initiatives of LASPEMA to monitor, sanitise and regulate all activities of the State’s Setbacks and IOS to achieve a resilient, sustainable and inclusive planning that will continue to provoke economic growth of the State.

Oso said that the proposed collaboration from the various LGAs and LCDAs and other relevant stakeholders would successfully rescue the State’s setbacks from all illegal activities like drug peddling, rape and armed robbery among others.

“To proactively drive the implementation of this programme,  data gathering is essential and key to making informed decisions that will guarantee effective and efficient planning of our Setbacks and IOS in the State”, he added.

The Chairperson of Apapa Local Government Area, Hon. IdowuOlajumoke pledged to support the agency in the realisation of its mandates. She declared that all unscrupulous activities on Setbacks and IOS must be curbed and treated with the urgency it deserves, stressing that a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of infractions must be embraced to tackle the issues.

She also urged residents of the local government to be hopeful of a better future for Apapa LGA, just as she canvassed a change in attitude for a more livable environment.

The Stakeholders’ meeting was attended by Executive Chairmen of Lagos Island East, Yaba, Iru/Victoria Island LCDAs, Surulere, Apapa LGAs and other stakeholders.
