The Lagos State Government, LASG, has called on residents in the state to embrace tree planting in efforts to curb negative effects from climate change.
The State’s Special Adviser on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, gave the imploration on Thursday, stating that maintaining a greener Lagos will create a sustainable environment for residents in the state.
Rotimi-Akodu, during a walk to begin the 2024 World Environment Day celebration in Lagos noted that the event is celebrated globally to sensitize and support progress on global commitments, which include protecting land and sea for nature and restoration of the planet.
Speaking on the theme, “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience,” the Special Adviser emphasized the significance of protecting the environment and ensuring a safe and green environment for all by hinting that tree planting combats environmental challenges such as desertification, drought, and erosion amongst others.
“We need to have a change in attitude to protect our environment because it is our land and our future,” as said by Rotimi-Akodu.
“We have to embrace the earth, not minding that we sometimes have natural disasters but with proper planning and programmes like the World Environment Day, we can always be ready for any form of disaster, be it natural or man-made.”
