The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has commenced a verification exercise for residents affected by the recent demolition in Oworonshoki, ahead of rolling out compensation and resettlement measures.

Officials say the exercise aims to accurately identify true victims, confirm ownership of impacted properties, and determine the scale of losses before disbursing recompense.

The verification process involves reviewing documentation, conducting site inspections, and interviewing claimants in the affected areas.

Sources within LASBCA indicate that only those whose structures were lawfully standing and who can present proof of ownership or tenancy may be eligible for relief. Claims linked to illegal encroachments on canal setbacks or drainage channels are expected to be excluded under pending state policies.

Community leaders and residents have expressed cautious optimism. Many say the verification is a critical step toward justice, while calling for transparency and fairness in how eligible victims are selected. Some voiced concerns that politically connected individuals might receive undue priority.

LASBCA has pledged to conclude the verification within a strict timeframe, after which compensation and relocation support will begin. The agency also stressed that the demolition initiative itself is part of the state’s broader flood control and urban renewal strategy, intended to protect lives and infrastructure in vulnerable communities.

As this process unfolds, affected residents have been advised to keep all property documents, photographs, and any proof of occupancy ready, so that legitimate claims can be validated swiftly.
