The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport, LAMATA, has partnered with the University of Chicago Energy Policy Institute in acquiring quality and low cost air monitoring devices.
The transport agency on Tuesday revealed that the initiative aligns with the state government’s commitment in measuring air quality along major transport corridors, focusing on alleviating air pollution through rigorous research, policy engagement and practical interventions.
“It is particularly associated with the Air Quality Life Index, AQLI, a major tool developed by the Energy Policy Institute, EPIC, of the Institute at the University of Chicago,” LAMATA, relaying on initiative disclosed on its website on Tuesday.
“The devices, sourced from multiple manufacturers including IQAir, AirBeam, AirGradient and Star Kres will enable LAMATA to gather data on LAMATA-regulated buses in line with the agency’s strategic direction on sustainability and public health.”
The agency stated that the measure will enable a credible and reliable data bank for informed decision-making and promote home-grown knowledge and expertise.
It added that the devices will be public to enable resident’s accessibility through the ‘OpenAQ’ platform, designed to aggregate and share real-time and historical air quality date from around the world.
