Lagos State Education Districts in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre has organised the 2023 Lagos Secondary Schools Model United Nations (LASSMUN) Assembly for students at Nigerian Institute of International Affairs ( NIIA), Victoria Island, Lagos.

Speaking at the event, the Lagos State First Lady, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the occasion, expressed her happiness and joy of participating in the assembly.

She noted that the assembly was a learning platform to expand the frontiers of education and designed to empower students in the State with life-changing knowledge and skills.

“It is commendable that this collaborative initiative between the Lagos State Government through the six Education Districts, and United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), has been sustained in the last four years as a learning tool for public speaking, consensus building, tolerance and International Relations”, she stated.

The First Lady emphasised that the Students-led, Student-centric and Student-focused global initiative was targeted at exposing the Students in Lagos State to information and knowledge that would enhance their capacity towards finding solutions to developmental issues confronting us as a State and a Country.

She urged all the Stakeholders to continue to implement initiatives that would reinforce the strategic position of education in fostering a better world for all.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of Education District II, Mrs. Anike Adekanye, who was the Chairman of the occasion, disclosed that the Administration of  Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu upholds the partnership with the officials of the UNIC to ensure that it adds to its achievements in educational facility renewal, methodological reengineering, human capital reinvention, rewarding and inspirational tourism for students achievers and upgraded technological- driven learning, among other innovative achievements in the education sector which have become most impactful, directional, realisable and a sustainable venture.

She thanked the First Lady for honouring the invitation despite her tight schedule, just as she appreciated her for fully participating in the fourth session of the conference.

In his remark, the Representative of the United Nations Information Centre, Mr. Seyi Soremekun congratulated the Representatives of the Students in the States who participated at that Assembly on the opportunity and privilege they had to express their views on some of the vital current issues of the 21st century.

He advised them not to engage in vices that would damage their future, adding that the platform has made them become Ambassadors and they should portray themselves as good Ambassadors of the Centre to the public.
