Lagos To Prosecute Five Suspects Over Illegal Waste Disposal

The Lagos State Government has arrested five persons for violating its environmental law through Indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
The arrests made by officers of the state’s Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, and the Lagos State Taskforce were held to ensure complaince to the law and to sensitize the residents on the need to practice cleanliness in the metropolis.
LAWMA informed that the suspects, two male and three females are facing prosecution at the state’s Taskforce office in Oshodi and will be charged to court upon completion of investigation.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Friday, held that the arrestees were nabbed during the midnight enforcement operation in Abule Egba, Mangoro, and Cement areas along the Abeokuta expressway.
Wahab said, “On the evening of May 21, 2025, LAWMA Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team expanded its operational efforts in the Abule Egba, Mangoro, and Cement areas along the Abeokuta Expressway.
“As a result of this monitoring and enforcement operation, five individuals were apprehended for partaking in unlawful waste disposal practices. The five individuals have been transferred to the LAWMA legal team at the Oshodi Taskforce office for appropriate legal proceedings.”
The Commissioner called on the residents to desist from the lawless act and dispose their refuse to PSP operators as directed by the Lagos State Government.
He noted that unscrupulous waste disposal is hazardous to the environment, especially as the raining season approaches.
Wahab emphasized that putting refuse in the surroundings does not only cause untidiness but is also a factor leading to cases of flooding and improper drainage system.
The agency’s head urged the inhabitants to imbibe cleaniness culture as necessary sanctions await perpetrators of the prohibited act.
