The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has conducted an environmental enforcement exercise leading to the arrest of 36 residents who are facing charges of illegal street trading.

LAWMA, alongside the state’s Taskforce team, while conducting the exercise disclosed that the arrestees consisting of 34 male and two females displayed their goods on the road median along the Ojo-Alaba corridor, thus, contravening the state’s environment laws.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, berated the unsanitary conditions around markets and roads in the metropolis, stating that all traders at the said location were given a deadline date to vacate the premises.

Wahab discloses that the arrests were made after the expiration of the said date, underscoring the state government’s commitment to restoring order alongside ensuring adherence to environmental regulations.

The Commissioner warned the traders to desist from street trading as necessary sanctions await perpetrators of the prohibited act.
