The Lagos State Government has announced stringent measures to combat exorbitant rent charges by homeowners, signaling a crackdown on those exploiting tenants

According to a statement from the State’s housing commissioner, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, homeowners found guilty of charging excessive rents will face severe penalties, including withdrawal of allocation.

The decision comes in response to numerous complaints from residents across public housing schemes about exorbitant rental fees, which undermine the government’s efforts to provide affordable housing.

Akinderu-Fatai emphasized that the government’s intention was to alleviate the burden on Lagosians by offering housing schemes with a five percent down payment and a ten-year payment plan. However, some homeowners have abused this generosity by prioritizing profit over public welfare

Expressing disappointment at this behavior, Akinderu urged estate facility managers and association members to report negligent allottees to the ministry promptly. He warned that units belonging to such homeowners would be revoked, with refunds issued to affected tenants.

Assuring continued support for first-time homebuyers, the commissioner affirmed the government’s commitment to providing outright purchase and rent-to-own platforms to meet the housing needs of Lagos residents.

This proactive stance by the Lagos State Government underscores its dedication to fostering fair and affordable housing solutions, ensuring that the benefits of government initiatives reach those in need.
