The Lagos State Police Command has ordered the immediate removal of the state’s Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit, popularly known as the Taskforce, from all traffic control duties.

The directive, issued by Commissioner of Police Tijani Olayiwola Fatai, comes after weeks of complaints from motorists who accused some operatives of harassment, extortion, and even working with touts to intimidate road users.

According to the police, the decision is aimed at restoring order, improving professionalism, and clearly defining who is responsible for traffic enforcement across the state.

While the Taskforce has been pulled off traffic duties, the command clarified that the agency will continue to carry out its other lawful responsibilities.

The police also urged residents to be careful when making allegations, advising them to properly identify officers and agencies involved in enforcement operations.

Reassuring the public, the command said it remains committed to protecting lives and property, while ensuring all operations are carried out within the law and in line with best practices.
