The Lagos State Government has signed a partnership deal with Ghanaian firm, Jospong Group of Companies, to enable implementation of waste management reforms.

The State Government disclosed that the initiative became necessary to facilitate measures to address waste disposal challenges in the area.

During the signing of the agreement between the duo on Tuesday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said that initiative is a step towards achieving a cleaner and healthier environment in the metropolis.

Sanwo-olu, said that the 13,000 tonnes of waste generated daily alongside the drive
to transform the state into a model mega-city with global standard highlighted the need for the state to overhaul the management system.

On how the initiative will be implemented, the Governor said, “A Transfer Loading Station will be built at the Olusosun dumpsite, which will then be shut down.

“From this station, 2,500 tonnes of waste will be transported daily to a new Material Recovery Facility in Ikorodu.

“A similar facility will be constructed at the Solous III dumpsite in Igando, with 1,500 tonnes of waste redirected to another new recovery centre in Badagry.

“This project will improve how we handle waste and is expected to create over 5,000 jobs directly and indirectly”.

Jospong Group Executive Chairman, Siaw Agyepong, assured the state of full commitment to the project.

Agyepong said that the project, expected to be completed within 18 months, would involve recycling facilities to aid the initiative.

“We will definitely and wholeheartedly work to the timeline of the collaboration. This is a relationship that we have tested, we have seen and convinced that the skill and expertise will work here in Lagos,” he said.
