Lagos NUJ, NPAN Information Ministry, others to observe APCOM 2020 election

Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State branch has been confirmed as the official observer of the 2020 election of the Association of Practitioners of Community Media in Nigeria (APCOM) slated to hold on Friday, January 17, 2020 in Lagos.
The Union’s Chairman, Dr. Qasim Akinreti said he would be at the APCOM’s Secretariat to personally observe the election process and comment on the outcome.
The Association, which is set to be a chapel of the union, stated that it would dissolve its outgoing executive board at its Annual General Meeting AGM) which would precede the election process for the 2020.
In a press statement, the outgoing President of the Association, Mr. Dayo Akintobi, said his Executive Board would give account of its stewardship over the last two years during the AGM, following which the EXCO would be dissolved to give way for new elections to be held.
According to the statement, all offices of the Executive Board are open for contest in the upcoming elections which include offices of the President, Vice President, General Secretary, and Treasurer. Others are Financial Secretary, Public Relations Officer, Assistant General Secretary, and Social/Welfare Officer.
ECHONEWS gathered that contestants for the various offices have been screened by the Electoral Committee at the Association’s Secretariat in Ilupeju, Lagos in preparation for the elections.
To adjudge the electoral process for transparency and fairness, the association stated that it has invited a number of key stakeholders in the media space to attend as observers.
Among them is Dr. Qasim Akinreti, Chairman, Lagos State Chapter, Nigerian Union of Journalists, who has confirmed his attendance and indicated that he would make a key announcement relating to community media during the event.
Others invited to observe the elections include representatives of the Lagos State Ministry of Information & Strategy, the Lagos State Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, and the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN).
