The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a new minimum wage of ₦150,000 for workers in the state, citing the rising cost of living and recent wage increases in Imo and Ebonyi states.

The Chairperson of the Lagos NLC, Funmi Sesi, made the demand on Thursday while reacting to the upward wage reviews by the two states.

Sesi noted that Lagos workers currently earn ₦85,000 as the minimum wage but deserve an increase to match the state’s higher cost of accommodation, transportation, feeding, and utilities.

“The time has come for an upward review of minimum wage in Lagos. At least someone has taken the bull by the horns and opened the space,” she said.

She added that no one could fault Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu if he approves a higher wage for Lagos workers, stressing that they deserve better pay and decent working conditions that reflect the state’s economic realities.

The state NLC boss also expressed optimism that other state governments would follow the examples of Imo and Ebonyi.

Recently, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State announced an increase in the minimum wage for state civil servants from ₦76,000 to ₦104,000, while the Ebonyi State Government raised its workers’ minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦90,000.
