The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, has officially flagged off activities marking the 2025 World Food Day with a fitness and awareness walk aimed at promoting food security, sustainable agriculture, and healthy living among residents.

The awareness walk, held on Tuesday in Alausa, Ikeja, was led by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, alongside the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture and Food Systems, Dr. Oluwarotimi Fashola.

Participants — including government officials, agricultural stakeholders, students, and residents — walked from JJT Park, Alausa, to Allen Roundabout and back, drawing attention to the state’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its food systems and encourage healthier lifestyles.

Speaking after the exercise, Commissioner Olusanya explained that the walk was not just a fitness activity, but a deliberate effort to raise awareness about the critical importance of agriculture in Lagos.

“People don’t see Lagos as an agrarian state, but under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos has proven to be very efficient in agriculture. We want residents to recognize that Lagos is indeed an agrarian state — though in a unique form and manner,” she said.

She highlighted that agriculture remains central to daily life, influencing everything from food to essential products like shea butter and tyres. Olusanya also called on young people to explore opportunities in the agricultural value chain, emphasizing that food production and innovation are vital to the state’s economic sustainability.
The Commissioner commended stakeholders, farmers, and entrepreneurs who continue to drive Lagos’ food resilience strategy, describing their contributions as key to achieving a hunger-free future.

“World Food Day is not just a celebration — it is a global call for collective action to end hunger and malnutrition,” Olusanya added.

The weeklong World Food Day 2025 activities began with a press briefing and will continue with the Lagos Agric Scholars Quiz Competition on Tuesday, October 14, at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa. The celebration will climax with a grand finale event on Thursday, October 16, at the Police College Parade Ground, Ikeja.

With this year’s observance, Lagos continues to reinforce its position as a front-runner in innovative urban agriculture, food security, and youth-driven agribusiness development in Nigeria.
