Lagos Judiciary creates new divisions

The Lagos State Ministry of Justice has announced the creation of two additional judicial divisions covering new geographical areas of the state.

This was made known by the judicial body through it’s Acting Registrar, Tajuden Elias.

Elias stated that the move was put in place under the directive of the Lagos State Chief Judge, Kazeem Alogba.

The new divisions : Eti-Osa and Yaba/Surulere Judicial Divisions, make it seven judicial divisions in the state in addition to other existing divisions in Ikeja, Lagos, Ikorodu, Badagry, and Epe.

The public notice stated that Justice Alogba created the new divisions pursuant to Section 51(1) of the High Court Law of Lagos State 2015.

Part of the notice read, “in terms of geographical jurisdiction, “Eti-Osa Judicial Division shall cover the entire Eti-Osa Local Government Area, comprising Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area and Iru/Victoria Island Local Council Development Area.

“The Yaba/Surulere Judicial Division on the other hand shall cover the entire Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, Surulere Local Government Area and Yaba Local Council Development Area.”

The notice disclosed that new Judicial Division would begin operation with the filing and adjudication of cases and all other legal business in both divisions shall begin from the date of this notice, Wednesday, January 10, 2024.

“All cases hitherto commenced and or being conducted at any other judicial division before commencement of this notice, shall continue to be dealt with in any such division unless the Honourable Chief Judge otherwise directs in writing” it added.
