LASURA ADVOCATES MIXED-USE BUILDINGS FOR LAGOS ISLAND MODEL CITY PLAN
The General Manager of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA) Tpl. Ajibike Shomade has advocated mixed-use buildings for the Lagos Island Model City Plan.
Speaking during a consultation meeting with the Dar-Al-Handasah Consulting Company, commissioned to develop the Lagos Island Model City Plan, Shomade said this is necessary since major parts of Lagos Island are commercially dominated, which poses security threats at night after the close of commercial activities.
“Everything can not be commercials, everything can not be a market area. It would be better if we had buildings with few floors for residential purposes, few floors for offices and few floors for shops so that after the close of commercial activities there will still be social activities and a lively atmosphere for residents that are living within that area”, she added.
The General Manager explained further that the State Government has given LASURA the approval to have resettlement buildings at the abandoned cable car site to house residents of Adeniji-Adele Low-Cost Housing Estate during the implementation of the regeneration project of the estate to avoid indigenes being chased out of their original location and town of residence.
In his remark, the representative of Dar-Al-Handasah, Dr. Adekunle Owolabi said the meeting was necessary to capture LASURA’s projects and plans in the master plan for the Lagos Island Model City Plan.
Owolabi said, “We want a holistic plan that every MDA will have a defined component in the Master Plan to avoid any kind of disagreements among stakeholders during the implementation of the project.
The Lagos Island Model City Plan, upon its completion, will have special characteristics and environmental sustainability that will engender sustainable future growth and socio-economic development of the State.
