The Lagos Island Local Government has flagged off ceremony on construction of a new secretariat building in the area.

Chairman of the Local Government, Hon. Tijani Olusi, at the event on Wednesday, hinted that the new four-story, U-shaped office secretariat consisting of three blocks is targeted at enhancing the administrative capabilities and services in the Local Government.

Olusi, providing an insightful overview of the history and evolution of the area recalled that the local government had traditionally operated from the Lagos City Hall until the creation of Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), which led to the establishment of Lagos Island East LCDA.

He further stated that due to the renovation of the City Hall, the secretariat was temporarily relocated to the Zappass Building on 64, Freeman Street. However, Freeman Street fell outside the jurisdiction of Lagos Island Local Government, necessitating for another move.

The  Chairman uttered, “The secretariat had to return to the Isale Eko area office, constructed by the former Chairman and Senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, Senator Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sanni.

“Despite this move, the premises were insufficient to house all the staff, prompting the need for a larger, more suitable secretariat. This led to the initiation of the current project, aimed at providing a spacious and remarkable administrative building for Lagos Island Local Government.

“The importance of this new secretariat is to improve local governance and accessibility,” the Chairman continued.

“So I encourage the people of Lagos Island to take full advantage of the closer and more accessible local government services. I also urge the residents to direct their complaints to relevant officers and to actively participate in the development of our community by paying their taxes regularly to designated banks”.

The Council Manager, Sunday Olujobi, highlighting the significance of the milestone, attributed the progress to the unwavering support of stakeholders. He emphasized that the Chairman’s efforts are part of a broader legacy as a leader of the community.

Also at the event, Alhaji Alabi Macfoy, the Baba Adinni of Nigeria, offered prayers on the actualization of the feat. He expressed confidence that the initiative would yield positive results to the area. He blessed the day as a monumental step forward for the local government.

Alhaji Oyilomo Danmole, a stakeholder, remarking on the project, acknowledged that while the development was long overdue, its realization is divinely ordained. He expressed hope that everyone present would live to see the grand opening and witness the project’s successful completion, marking it as a significant record in the history of Lagos Island.

He said, “This foundational ceremony marks a promising development for Lagos Island, aiming to enhance administrative efficiency, improve service delivery, and foster community development.

“The new secretariat is not just a building; it symbolizes the continued growth and progress of Lagos Island Local Government under the leadership of Mayor Tijani Adetoyese Olusi.”
