The Lagos State Government has sealed a school facility in Lekki over environmental misdeed posing as theat to public health in the area.
The state government disclosed that a discharge of untreated faecal sludge and wastewater was seen leaking out of the school, Global International College, into it’s surrounding causing unpleasant odour in the surroundings.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, held that the enforcement which was carried out on Saturday, was put up after several warnings to the school management which were not adhered to.
Wahab, after noting that the untreated faecal sludge and wastewater flowed into drains via a pumping machine, urged residents in the state to adopt responsible wastewater disposal and hygiene practices, adding that it is essential to improve public health and promote a safer environment.
The Commissioner warned that the state government would not tolerate environmental violations as necessary sanctions await defaulters of the stipulated environmental laws.
“All environmental nuisance and pollution portends grave dangers to public health and will be met with appropriate sanctions and/or prosecution,” Wahab said.
