Lagos Gets First Female House of Assembly Speaker

Lawmaker at the Lagos House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has been appointed as Speaker at the state’s Legislative House.

Meranda who was sworn in on Monday at the Assembly Complex in Alausa, Ikeja, takes over the position following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa who had been the Speaker for over a decade.

The legislator, who represents Apapa Constituency 01 and held the position of Deputy Speaker, pledged diligence, integrity while taking on oath of office. She added: “I affirm that I will be faithful as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

“I will perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability, faithfully, and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Meranda becomes the 8th Presiding Speaker of the Assembly since it’s inception in 1979.
