Lagos Dwarf Association Marks World Dwarfism Awareness Day, Calls for Inclusion and Respect
By Emmanuel Daniji
Members of the Association of Dwarfs in Lagos State on Saturday joined the global community to commemorate World Dwarfism Awareness Day, using the occasion to raise awareness about the challenges faced by people with restricted growth and to advocate for greater inclusion, respect, and equal opportunity in society.
The event, which brought together members from across the state, was led by veteran actor Israel Akiode, popularly known for his roles in Nollywood productions. Akiode, who serves as the Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the Dwarf Association and the representative of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) on the Executive Council of the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC), emphasized the importance of awareness and empathy in addressing societal discrimination.
Speaking at the gathering, Akiode highlighted the need for government and private institutions to create more accessible environments and empowerment opportunities for persons with dwarfism. He noted that while progress has been made, much remains to be done to ensure fair representation and social inclusion.
“We are not asking for pity, but for understanding and opportunity,” Akiode said. “People with dwarfism have talents, skills, and ambitions just like everyone else. Society must look beyond height and see ability.”
The commemoration, observed annually on October 25, also featured sensitization talks, cultural displays, and advocacy sessions aimed at promoting respect, dignity, and equality for persons living with dwarfism.
Members of the association reaffirmed their commitment to continue engaging stakeholders, urging policymakers, media practitioners, and the public to support efforts toward a more inclusive Lagos where people of all physical statures can thrive.
