Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Cecilia Dada, has called for greater collective efforts to combat domestic violence and sexual abuse, warning that the problems continue to undermine public safety and social stability.

In a statement released on Monday, Dada argued that such cases should no longer be dismissed as private family matters but treated as serious crimes and violations of human rights. She described them as “direct assaults on the dignity of women, children, and other vulnerable persons.”

According to the commissioner, the culture of silence has allowed abuse to flourish unchecked. “Domestic violence and sexual abuse thrive in silence. When victims are too afraid or ashamed to speak, perpetrators continue to harm others without consequence,” she said.

The ministry, she noted, has been expanding the reach of its Domestic and Sexual Violence Units, which offer counselling, legal support, shelters, and economic empowerment for survivors.

Dada insisted, however, that government alone cannot end the problem. She called on families, communities, schools, and religious institutions to play more active roles in prevention and response. “When you witness abuse, speak up. When you suspect violence, intervene. When a survivor seeks help, believe them and support them,” she urged.

The commissioner also directed her message at survivors, stressing that they are not alone or responsible for the abuse they endured. She encouraged them to seek assistance, promising that state support systems are available to help them pursue justice and recovery.

“Together, let us break the cycle of silence and shame,” Dada said. “Domestic violence and sexual abuse must never be tolerated in society.”
