The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, has commenced the installation of sheet piles on the downstream section of System 1 (Odo Iyalaro–Ojota–Ogudu reach) — one of the state’s most critical flood control infrastructures.

Announcing the development, the Honourable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Hon. Tokunbo Wahab, described the intervention as a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen drainage systems and enhance flood resilience across Lagos.

According to Wahab, the project will reinforce the stability of the channel’s banks and improve stormwater flow capacity, providing long-term protection for communities along the drainage corridor.

“This intervention is a major step in strengthening the drainage channel, ensuring stability of the banks, and improving stormwater flow capacity,” Wahab stated. “It is part of our broader efforts to deliver sustainable flood mitigation solutions across the state, especially in densely populated and high-risk flood corridors.”

The System 1 channel, which stretches through Ogudu, Ojota, Ifako, Gbagada, and Maryland, is the largest and widest primary drainage route responsible for deflooding major parts of the Lagos mainland.

Wahab reaffirmed that the ongoing works reflect the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to proactive environmental management under the “A Greater Lagos Rising” agenda.

He assured residents that the ministry will continue to prioritize critical flood control projects, maintain clear waterways, and deploy modern engineering solutions to safeguard lives and property during the rainy season.
