Lagos Assembly Pushes For Amotekun For Effective Security

The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed a bill for the implementation of the Amotekun Corps in a move to ensure adequate security in the state.
The lawmakers passed the bill by amending the existing Neighbourhood Safety Corps, LNSC, Law to accommodate the regional security initiative, thus, creating an avenue to scale it’s third reading.
The legislators relayed that the corps, established in unison by Southwest governors, will work with the LSNC making it a specialized unit with licensed arms.
The legislative arm disclosed that a Chairman, which is to be appointed by the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will oversee the functions of the corps to assist in maintaining law and order in Lagos, working with other security agencies, and will apprehend criminals and hand them over to police for prosecution.
Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, and other members reviewed the bill before passage which cut across arguments on the operatives carrying licensed arms.
However, they agreed that the initiative, which is subject to the Governor’s signature to be implemented, will not only bolster in Lagos but in the southwest in general.
They also stressed that the measure will enhance law enforcement and address common crimes like robbery, kidnapping.
